Feedback phrases for mixed-nationality teams
Direct feedback is valued in many German workplaces. Mixed teams need shared phrases so honesty does not sound like an attack.
Workplace culture coaching in Germany often spends an entire session on how feedback is delivered. Not because people dislike honesty—because the packaging differs enough to trigger defence.
Useful starter phrases for managers include: “Here is what I observed in yesterday’s client call,” “The part that worked was…,” and “For the next deliverable, I need this change.” Pair observation with a specific next action. Avoid personality labels.
For hires who come from softer feedback cultures, we practise asking: “What would you change if I did this again?” and “Is this a preference or a requirement?” Those questions invite precision without forcing the manager to soften the message into vagueness.
Manager culture briefings at Digitalsysengine include cue cards with these lines in English and German. Teams that rehearse them once tend to use them during probation—when clarity matters most.
